Description

On Bag ‘O Tricks, Don dives into the musical styles and instruments he most loves to arrange and compose for.

His first instrument was the electronic organ, and his deep affection for the unmistakable sound and soul of the Hammond B3 jazz/rock organ still runs strong. That passion comes alive on tracks like Hammond Eggs and Sizzlin’.

Smooth jazz remains a cornerstone of the album, while a pair of smooth Latin-flavored selections — A Tender Season and Paid In Full — add rhythmic color and warmth to the mix.

With a background at Disneyland centered on horn arrangements and transcriptions, Don originally planned to title the album “Gotta Swing” intending it to be a full big band project. After reconsidering the current ‘demand’ for big band music, the concept shifted — but not before he penned a couple of high-energy swing numbers that fans of the style will surely appreciate: Gotta Swing and Steppin’ Out.

And of course, an album called Bag ‘O Tricks wouldn’t be complete without a few slow-burning “belly-rubbers” — jazz style, naturally. So sit back and enjoy Slow Dancin’, Coffee In The Rain, and a playful nod to a legendary sax great with Stan Gets It.
